6357 Week 3 Blog Post

I think that early childhood centers should have the option to include books that depict gay or lesbian individuals.  There are many families these days who are lead by same-sex partners, who have someone struggling with their identity personally.  Showing that these feelings are normal is important for children to experience.  One of my favorite books is "And Tango Makes Three."  This book is about two same-sex penguins who adopt an egg and have their own bay penguin that they care for.  This story shows a same-sex family without being overpowering. The best part is that it is a true story.

My husband has personal experience with hearing the word "gay" and "fag"  when he was younger.  He was convinced for the longest time that this caused his brother to come out as gay.  It took him a long time to understand that even though other family members used those terms inappropriately around him and his brother, it did not "make" his brother gay.  Learning about homosexuality from my brother in law helps me to better understand what others have gone through in order to come out to their families and friends.
