Poverty and Homelessness Week 3

First I want to talk about how I got to explore the blogs on the website of the Global Fund for children.

There were so many different stories to read I wasn't even sure where to begin.  I loved that I was able to look at these stories and get to experience different voices, those who work with the fund, and those who benefit from the help of others.  I love seeing the research and learning that goes into finding ways to improve the lives of children all over the world.

Their blog page can be accessed here.

Next this week we were challenged to look at different websites that work to educate people on poverty in homelessness.  I looked at the Institute for Children, Poverty & Homelessness, also known as ICPH.
Their website can be accessed here.
On their websites homepage they have words scrolling by that say:
Homelessness is a

  • community
  • family
  • housing
issue.

Their goal is to show that homelessness affects so many, but it has a major impact on the students of the communities.  They want to show that the community can be rural, industrial, suburban, or city.  Everyone can be affected by this, but how can we make a change?

Global Fund for Children Week 2

Part I:

This week I continued looking at the Global Fund for Children website.  I did subscribe to their newsletter "Grassroots Review,"  but I have not received a copy of it yet.  So this week I decided to continue exploring the website.  I wanted to find out more about the impact the Global Fund for children has on those that they work with and support.

A large part of what they believe is how there is a theory of change.  They have designed a framework that helps to validate their strategies of social change and increase their evidence that these strategies do work.

You can access their theory of change map here.

Their lasting hope of impact is that children and youth are safe and are able to receive high-quality and lifelong education as well as opportunities for them to grow.

I am excited for when I am able to get the newsletter and learn more about the impact that this theory of change has on what they do in order to help children and youth improve their education as well as their wellbeing.

Some questions that came up for me is:
How do they choose who to work with?
What can I do to help?
How can I get my own students involved and learning about this type of change in the classroom?

Expanding Horizons and Expanding Resources

Part I:
Expanding Horizons
I have chosen to look at the Global Fund for Children throughout this course.  On their home page they state that their mission statement is this:

"Partnering to build a world where all children and youth are safe, strong, and valued."

I am excited to learn more about this fund through their emails and newsletters.

Part II:
Expanding Resources:

So what does the Global Fund for Children do?
Their website gives a step-by-step plan of how their organization works.
Their step-by-step model can be accessed here
Their goal is to help find organizations that in their early stages of development and fund them and help them to improve, in order to give children the greatest support possible. I love the idea of this and working with others as partners, especially when it comes to helping children to improve. I also love the fact that they work with their partners to "walk"  in order for them to have the opportunity to "run" on their own.  It will be very interesting to explore this website, and others like it as well in order to learn more about it.
